Cobotron

Hey team,
On top of finals, I've been handling a couple commissions. The largest of which is a project I've been working on with COBO Center here in Detroit. They're undergoing a $299,000,000 renovation and needed a mascot for the construction happening around the building.

Over a period of about four weeks, we went through around six different ideas,

finally settling on "the coborobo" and turning him into "cobotron".

I had the opportunity to attend a press conference on the unveiling of the mascot which was a huge honor and took some photos with some of the big names in Detroit's city planning.

Check out the plans for the new face of Cobo here. It feels good to be a part of something that will help to revitalize the city of Detroit. Thanks to Joe Ruffolo and Thom Connors for giving me this opportunity.

Real Metamorphosis

Hey Team,
I've got some cool news which I might have mentioned before, but wish to embellish upon. I belong to the artist organization J+D, along with four of my excellent peers- Meredith, Millie, Melanie, and Brian. The exciting news is that we are going to have a table for Detroit's Annual Noel Night on December 3rd! We've collaborated to present a 12 days of Christmas countdown calender! These are my two additions and I also organized the layout. We'll be selling a limited edition of these at our table next weekend, so everyone should stop by and grab a copy!

I'm really proud of the work we all did. It turned out really great.

In Intermediate Illustration and Design, we were assigned to put together a book. I found this to be a fantastic opportunity to finally make something out of my comic. So here's a little preview of the book. I'll have it delivered in a couple weeks but in the meantime, I have plans to create a limited edition of comic books for noel night. So I'll be selling a couple of things here at the College for Creative Studies on December 3rd.

We had to design an illustration to accompany a short story in Harpers magazine called "The Hare's Mask". It's a sad reminiscent tale about family and I chose to go more surreal with the painting. Acrylic on SUPER warped Illustration board. And here's some process...

Sketch dump

Hey Team,
Just a simple sketch dump today. I have been delighting in my relationship with Mr. Brush Pen. Also, my frequent liaisons with water-brushes and ink washes have been proving fruitful.
In the way of serious news, I've been really getting into graphic illustration and hand lettering. Therefore, I've been attempting to draw some script.

It's a learning experience.

Interesting Internet Infographic

I'm taking a class which is meant to blend graphic design with illustration and let me tell you a secret... I think I'm finding my nitch with this graphic thing. I'm slowly falling in love with bold shapes and isometric rectangles... Ipod cases, laptop skins, T-shirts... I may be redirecting my work in the near future, so watch out for that.

Anywhoo, our assignment here was to visualize data about our internet habits. This project has made me realize that I am unhealthy. However, this project is still not enough to make me change.

Yeah. I know. Maybe the blood clot I'm destined to develop will snap me out of this bad behavior.

Hey team,
This week we're cookin' up crawdads, Louisiana style!

No, wait a second... this isn't a southern flavors food blog! BUT DOESN'T THAT SUCCULENT PIECE OF MEAT LOOK DELICIOUS? (sorry vegetarian readers!).

This is an art blog, and that is an editorial painting assignment! We were asked to provide a spot illustration to accompany an article in the New York Times about the many different ways they prepare crayfish in New Orleans. Of all my sketches, the exploded view of the crustacean appealed to me most so I expanded on it (LOL, SEE WHAT I DID THERE?)

My teacher in this class is a sweetheart, and I very much like her... but I discovered something sinister about her this past Tuesday... She's a troll.

I'm quietly sitting there and painting away after having spent a good chunk of time thumb-nailing, sketching up my preliminaries, designing color studies, and finalizing line work (as we had been told to do), when Cathy comes up to my work station. She takes a look at the following color study and goes...

"You know, this is enough for you to turn into a client."

The RA Staff

My boss recently asked me to do comic versions of the staff of RA's to be displayed at the front desk of the apartment building when we're on duty. This project took a day and a half and let me be the first to tell you- getting someone's likeness when you've only allowed yourself dots for eyes is a pain in the butt!

I'm working on a new project!

I've been asked to contribute an origional painting for a local car show. Being that i'm not an automobile lover or someone who frequently paints them, I opted for a different take on this painting.

Okay, I have a confession. Within the past month I have slowly descended into the fiery pits of a certain addictive website...

Yes... It's true. I have developed an attachment to this website that rivals that of Cary Grant's attachment to nicotine. I have explored the links almost as much as Daniel Boone explored the west, and the ferocity in which I've been trying to become recognized can only be likened to Lindsay Lohan's attention-whoring... well, whoring.

By 'perusing' this website, I noticed that many people (including me) enjoyed small comics and funny things. As a matter of fact, the "LOL" tag is the most popular search on the site. So I've been exploring the comedic abilities of my right hand and my tablet.

People liked it. as a matter of fact, "Cubone" liked it...

In order to understand this joke, let me explain. On tumblr you can follow blogs, like posts, or reblog someone elses posts. All this information is displayed on your homepage.

"Cubone reblogged your photo" appeared on said homepage,

and being that cubone is my favorite pokemon (I may have dressed like him for halloween) This was kind of a big deal.

"Cubone" reblogged this image too, and tagged on a very sweet message. It made my day :)

The moral of this story is: Tumblr makes beth smile... and also it's kinda cool that "tissuebabies" liked me too.

I am quickly nearing the end of my second year here at CCS and there is so much to think about. It's finally time for me to begin my work, carving a place out for me as an artist in the world and I need to decide how I want to be perceived. The topic of having my own "style" is an incredibly challenging thing for me to accept. I have such a revulsion to the idea of sticking to one way of doing things. Yes, you can/do become really good at it and therefore celebrated for it and there are plenty of instructors and organizations such as Illustration Mundo, which tell you that in order to be the most successful illustrator you can be, you must have a style. My problem is, I don't want to give up those techniques and avenues that I'm interested in but have yet to explore. Picking a defining look feels so stifling to me.

Expanding on this topic, I watched a documentary on the celebrated designer Milton Glaser where he talks about the idea of style and what he said really caught my attention. First he quotes Ernst H. Gombrich in saying "there really is no such thing as art. There are only artists" and what he means is that art is defined generationally. It is what society determines it any moment in history. Now, with that said, he goes on to make what I think is a very interesting point:

"the great enemy of art is the institutionalization of belief: like style, or like taste.

Once that crystallization of belief happens, you realize that it becomes a limitation."

In saying that, he's articulating what I've been pondering... And that presents the question: is it ok to not have a 'style'? Well, here I've got a prolific graphic designer and illustrator telling me that style is a limitation... If that is his genuine belief, and he has found so much success (this is the man who created "I [heart] NY") Then why can't I also be successful without regulating myself to a certain look?

Perhaps I'm being hypocritical in my challenging the idea of having a set style because it's very possible that I actually do conform to a "look" and am just not acknowledging it. However, I have been approached on multiple occasions and told "you don't have a style", which is an odd sort of backhanded complement in that yes I can be versatile, but theres also a pinch of... "Beth... ur doin it wrong".

Perhaps my opinion will change on the matter as I mature through these next two years, but It's more likely that it wont and I'll just continue cranking out a splattering of different looking pieces depending on the application. I have a lot of goals to accomplish with my work, and not all of them can be achieved with the same looking imagery. Thats probably what it all boils down to: I want to do work for many different fields.

When I sat down to write this blog entry- I intended to talk about my sudden interest in design and typography. Clearly my subconscious wanted to talk about style... But that's okay. I'm designing my business card and I guess the process is forcing me to delve deep within myself to discover who I am as a person as well as how I want to brand myself.

Looks like if I don't figure it out soon, I'm just going to revert to drawing owls on everything.

A Little Work in Progress

THE MINI ZINE.

The wonderful Mark Murphy (find his blog here) came and gave a workshop in my letterpress class where he challenged all of us to create 16 page long "mini zines". I decided to do a simple picture based story with mine about the sound of a guitar. I'm excited about it because I've never used my personal comic drawings any way other than as sketchbook doodles.

The project will be finished on Wednesday when we Skype live with Mark out in California. These 17 some hours I've spent on these carvings will be well worth it... I hope!

We were teamed up with partners and made to choose two contesting ideas or object to battle with. Some of the topics were Goth v. Prep, Nude v. Clothed, and American cute v. Japanese cute.

My partner and I went the food route and decided to do Coffee v. Tea. I went with tea so...

It's Comic Time

Prints for Sale!

Hello brilliant world! I have a wonderful new process to share with you all!

LINOLEUM CUT ON THE LETTERPRESS

LOOK HOW FUN!!

I love this process. It takes an incredible amount of preparatory work in order to really do a good job, but its a wonderful and gratifying way of creating art. Don Kilpatrick is my teacher in this class, his website can be found here, and he's shared a bit of wisdom he's picked up. He says anything that loses its relevance, needs to find use as an art form in order to stay alive in the world. Letterpress is a physical archaism at this point and is now finding use as a tool to create these prints... and let me just say it's freaking fun to create prints.

So here's what I want to do. I want to sell these prints.

I'm going to be creating a second edition and I will be selling them for $20 a piece.

These are one of a kind and each one has its own special character. I also put a lot of love into them :3

This was the first edition I ran. Out of 6, there are 3 left which I'm also willing to sell!

So it's been a very very eventful past couple of weeks for little 'ol Bethany. So eventful, in fact, that she hasn't been sleeping much.

uuuuuuggggghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

I found out that 4th semester Illustrators learn how to brainstorm the crap out of a concept. Therefore, I have pages and pages of process work and thumbnailing, without much finished work to show. This is going to be a work in progress update.

I don't feel up to scanning anything tonight, so on top of this being a simple process update, the pictures of the process will also be taken by my webcam and my phone! Because I find high quality representational pictures of my work to be so overrated...

I'm just lazy.

Lino-cut for Letterpress in the 21st Century! I'm printing the final image tomorrow, but I have 3 plates to do so it's probably going to take like 4 hours. I'm looking forward to it. Oh, and the line drawing on the top is the sketch of my first piece in Erik's Illustration Techniques II class. It's coming along.

I'm taking Advanced Figure Painting on top of all my Illustration classes and this is the second oil painting we've started from a model (30"x40"... so big!). Now... because I want you guys to think I can paint well, I will not post my first in-class painting. I am much much happier with how this one is coming along and it's because of the mistakes I made with the first one that this one looks like an actual person... so far.

Next up is the process of my tarot card for Image Making I. I pulled "The High Priestess" and I just realized this image is backwards...

Also, no I did not reference erotic pictures for her pose... during class...

Aaaaand this is a doodle I colored. I'm finding myself putting these sun-disk like circles behind the ladies I draw. I think it might become a thing...

You know, when I look at these pieces together, I start to feel like my work is slowly becoming identifiable as my own. I think I've got a style in the works!

Working on Progress

Hey team,

I've been working and sketching and conceptualizing because its the end of the first week of my 4th semester and apparently, there is no actual art to be done... also, i got an upper respiratory infection...

So i've gotten a start on some personal work instead!

Commission Update

I am very proud to have been asked to do some promotional work for my college and at this point in time, I am halfway done with the commission!

The project is to do a series of 12 stickers each representing the different majors here at the College for Creative Studies. I'm aaaalmost at the halfway point and will kick the rest of these out in the next two days. As for now, here's a quick preview of the collection.

I'm pretty excited about how they're turning out and hopefully by the time I finish, each will be equally attractive to different people depending on what their tastes are.

It's been a wonderful challenge.

Hey everyone out there- I hope you've had a wonderful holiday break so far, I know I've been tremendously busy. Finals are finally over and I walked away with all 'A's this semester which I am very proud of.

So lets get to the parts you guys like: the pictures.

This is a guitar I painted for a buddy I pulled for Secret Santa. I'll post the thumbnails once I get myself near a scanner, but he was really happy with the final result- as was I. I'm going to paint my guitar now :)

This is a detail shot from my finished "Accident Waiting to Happen" painting... I wasn't able to get a good picture of it before I turned it in... So you'll get to see that later!

This was an in-class oil painting of our wonderful model, Janet. We were suppose to bring in one color... But i wanted to use more, so this is what happened. I think it was about 2 hours?

This is a commission I'm working on and it's helping me prove to myself that I can do more than just draw and paint. YES GO PHOTO-MANIPULATION!

FINALLY I have some perspective work that I feel good about showing! I've always loved these technical pieces when I see them done by others but this is the first time I've actually liked the end result of my labors.

I love this piece. I hate how much sleep I haven't gotten because of it.

Erik Olson's Figure Illustration II class again. This is the most stressful, frustrating, and rewarding class I've ever taken and I actually REALLY enjoy it. The above is my kinda BS color study done in photoshop. (if you knew what I did to color it you'd tell me I am a lazy bum)

Typography Portraits!

Whoa! 2 updates in one day? this is madness!

In Illustration and Design we have an assignment to make a type portrait. Again, I find myself drawing myself... again! The top piece is where I started with and it is all type. ALL TYPE O_O.

So here are my variations. The only one I dislike is the one with the pattern in my hair. We'll see what the teacher says tomorrow!

Alright! It has been a very very busy couple of weeks here in 1105 and i apologize for the lack of updates. I simply never made the time to sit down and scan anything in, but now I've got a free couple of hours to do this. Because it's been a couple of weeks, this will be a pretty big update.

First up, last time I went home I spent a lot of time perusing the interwebs looking up fantastic artists. In doing this, i realized that I have pretty much stopped sketching since the end of summer and that's no good! So I've picked up the little moleskine again and have been going at it. So first I have a couple of my doodles.

Next up in my most work heavy class we're doing a project called "an accident waiting to happen". When i realized my initial idea could not be realized, I sat down and thought about what else i could do... and pregnancy popped into my mind.

So here are my thumbnails for an accident waiting to happen, where the drunk couple forgets their condom. ehehehe

SELF PORTRAIT TIME!

this was the largest time suck of my time away from you Mr. Blog but what fun! Here i have process pictures- and please excuse the varying colors and temperatures. these pictures were taken not only at my studio space, but also in front of my closet and in the bathroom... So they're all a little different.

Right off the bat i made a big mistake. I layed in my underpainting loosely and without much attention to the linework i laid down previously. That caused a bunch of problems with proportions and unity later on... established everything and tried to get its local color right... also the plate behind the head is finished.

Kicked out my face and the background at this point. I remember being very happy with the face and hands... looking back I made myself look like an idealized asian and that hand on the owl is poo poo.

Now the cloth is finally yellow instead of that vivid orange color, and the cheetah print snuggie hanging behind me-yes, snuggie- is finished. This was the way I turned it in for final critique. Everything as finished as I could get it.

After a couple of small corrections this is how it now stands. I'm not entirely happy with it but I'm satisfied with my technique. I wish the likeness was better and HO I AM TERRIBLE AT PAINTING HANDS! Found that out about myself! oh and by the way, whenever i took pictures of this my lips looked extra puffy. in real life they mysteriously don't... so I'm not pouting in this picture if you were wondering.

SO! I've made an alarming discovery!

This semester, I have unexpectantly become somewhat of a one-note... I've found that just about every project i begin has 1 of these three elements in some way or another

all I ever draw is:

yes... myself, owls, and harry potter.

Hey everyone! I apologize for my lack of updating this month. I've been crazy busy and hadn't dedicated the time to photographing any of the work I've been producing. That means this post is going to be jam packed!

Alright, first I'd like to congratulate myself on turning 20 this month! I have officially been alive for 2 decades and it has been awesome. :3

Okay, onto the fun stuff. Yesterday, Danni, Joni, and I went out shopping around detroit and there were good times had by all.

We ended up going to 3 different place. First we went to this charming little shop called City Bird which had a large array of charming little things like cards, stuffed animals, and jewlery. I'm only showing pictures from this place because the other pictures look like poo.

I seriously considered buying that owl card. he was only $2 but i didn't have any cash on me and didn't want to make that small of a purchase with a card. Also, those little wood pieces are carved out as rings! Freaking awesome!

OWLS GALORE! See that little guy on the top left? I love him. I want him. But i need to eat so that can't happen... It's all so pretty right??

This is a much better representation of my painting abilities than the in class pieces. Those are hard!

Next up for Figure2 is the self portrait assignment. After much thought, I decided I wanted to do a throwback to the Italian Renaissance and all of that roman catholic symbolism that litters every. single. painting. Therefore, I'm doing a spinoff of a madonna and child painting. All of the elements aren't quite there yet, but I intend everything in this piece to have meaning.

...and yes, I will be using a Harry

Potter book in place of a Bible.

That is definitely happening.

Busy busy week you guys. My computer crashed, and that suuucked... So now I'm working on my little 10" notebook which is surprisingly accommodating! Anyway, here are some fun value study type figure pieces I did. The sitting one was my best of the day...
